The SBOL data standard is a data exchange representation for synthetic biology designs. Its goal is to improve the efficiency of data exchange and reproducibility of synthetic biology research.

As summarized below, the SBOL data standard is capable of representing the structure and function of a synthetic biology design (such as its sequence and molecular interactions) and leverages ontologies such as SyBiOnt, Dublin Core, PROV-O, the Sequence Ontology (SO), and the Systems Biology Ontology (SBO).
